Why position size matters more than confidence
Two traders can take the same setup and experience very different outcomes because one risks a small, planned amount while the other takes an oversized position. Confidence does not reduce market risk. Size determines how much damage a wrong idea can do.
A repeatable sizing rule removes one of the most emotional decisions in trading.
The basic calculation
Start with the amount of money you are willing to lose if the trade reaches its invalidation point. Then measure the distance from entry to stop as a percentage. A simplified spot-position estimate is: risk budget divided by stop distance.
For example, if your risk budget is $50 and the stop is 5% away, the theoretical position size is about $1,000 before fees and slippage. In real trading, you should reduce that number to allow for execution costs and the possibility of a worse-than-expected fill.
Let the setup determine the stop
Do not force every trade to use the same stop distance. A volatile asset may need more room than a slower one. The stop should reflect where the setup is invalid, while the position size adjusts to keep the financial risk controlled.
CME education makes the same relationship explicit: stop placement and the amount you are willing to risk are the key inputs for determining size.
Account for correlated exposure
Position sizing is not complete when you look at one trade in isolation. Several altcoin positions can behave like one large market-direction bet. If Bitcoin and the broader market fall sharply, correlations can rise and multiple positions can lose together.
A practical rule is to reduce new size when your existing positions already depend on the same bullish or bearish market scenario.
Make the rule boring
The best sizing rule is one you can apply when you feel excited, frustrated, or certain you have found the perfect setup. Write it down, calculate it before entry, and avoid increasing size because you want to recover a previous loss.
Boring risk rules are a feature. They protect the account from your strongest emotions.
